Urog
Urogs are contemplative, silicon-based life-forms inspired by geometry and are often found wandering the stars in search of answers to the galaxy's most enigmatic questions.
If you want to play a character who seeks perfection through learning and understanding, you should play an urog.
You Might…
- Become agitated when your routine is disrupted.
- Possess encyclopedic knowledge on an extremely niche field of study or work of art.
- Enjoy time alone to read or contemplate the universe.
Others Probably…
- Find you rude when you speak tersely.
- Assume you're good with numbers and organization.
- Misconstrue your lack of physical activity for laziness.
Physical Description
Urogs can survive in more extreme temperatures due to their silicon nature. However, they expend more energy than carbon-based life-forms do to live. Urogs spend most of their day encased in their shells, floating and eating via their cilia, and emerge from their shells only when necessary. Spending more than an hour interacting with others or their environment is incredibly mentally taxing.
Urogs are naturally electropositive and carry a slight electrical charge. This quality typically gives urogs a blueish hue, though they can alter their color by consuming different minerals. They can shift the colorations of their individual scales however they see fit. Some do so to create a sense of identity. Others have a very specific reason that they don't have the time or energy to explain.
Society
Each city dedicates itself to a particular field of study or purpose. For example, Zethir, a city carved into the side of a giant crystal cliff, houses the leading facilities on medicine and bioengineering. The industrial park of Rurrik in the Nymilipan Pediplain breaks down waste from every settlement into its molecular components and uses that to fuel its manufacturing. Lake Kelligan, a mile-wide ammonia lake, is the site of a massive data center and infosphere server, while the spaceport of Ekynas is the center of interstellar commerce. Every city is equipped with necessary support, such as warehouse and distribution centers, child-rearing services, and administration.
Urog physiology demands energy conservation, and thus efficiency is a vital core value for many an urog. This concept permeates every aspect of society. Much of daily life is automated and robotized. Conversations are kept short and to the point. Other species often find these interactions cold, bordering rude. An urog spends most of their time in their resting state, planning their day's activities, reviewing the results of the previous day's efforts, and looking for optimization opportunities. Time is scheduled every four days for leisure activities to relieve stress and fatigue. Recreational activities are minimally exertive and mentally soothing or stimulating. Vidgames and docuseries are popular entertainment on Dykon, but it's just as common for an urog to spend their day curled up with offworld literature and lo-fi music playing in the background.
Pupae are taken from their parents and given to trained caregivers for rearing. Formal education begins as soon as the child is capable of independent movement and telepathic communication. After their aptitudes are evaluated, the young urog enrolls in an academic program aligned with their field of interest and learning method. An urog not demonstrating the required proficiency to continue their education into a more complex field can choose to repurpose themselves as test subjects, relaxation companions, and subject matter experts on popular culture. It's every urog's civic duty to unlock the mysteries of the universe and share them, whatever form those mysteries take.
A vital part of learning is teaching, and urogs are encouraged to seek mentorship during their early education, or their dendrite phase. When the mentor feels their protégé has learned all they can from them, the relationship dissolves. A dendrite's title is changed to learned, denoting their education level. This process repeats as education continues, with titles analogous to rising heights: elevated, zenithed, stratospheric, and so forth.
The most prestigious positions on Dykon reside at the Dykon Replication Studies Center. The center was founded less than a century after the Gap, in response to a disastrous agricultural experiment that nearly wiped out Dykon's native berry population. In this massive facility consisting of biodomes recreating carbon-based environments, academics can safely conduct research that would otherwise only be possible offworld. Admittance is restricted to only the most adept and wizened urogs, and even among those researchers, only the highest performing maintain their tenure.
Dykon's primary export is knowledge. Natural resources are preserved to maintain a healthy ecosystem, but thanks to Drift travel, importing materials is safe and inexpensive. This convenience sparked a manufacturing boom that vitalized their research across many disciplines, from magical to mechanical. The promise of better-quality products made faster and cheaper attracts many offworld entrepreneurs. The urog governing council, a panel of experts on areas of planetary concern called The Preeminence, regulates trade with a Dykon-first doctrine. They'll only accept bids that ensure the sustainability of Dykon and offer learning opportunities.
Alternatively, many urog dignitaries are contracted as teachers and consultants by major corporations. Two new efforts are underway to further grow their education-based economy. The University of Dykon Online offers instructor-led and self-paced curricula via the infosphere. For those who prefer a more hands-on approach, they can attend Huk63C Xav-S-Genetics Academy for Sapient Carbon-Based Life-forms, a space station and school orbiting Dykon. Admission is highly selective.
Traditional names for Dykon-based urogs follow a uniform structure that efficiently identifies an individual's context within their society upon first meeting. Lineage is tracked like a fractal tree; names consist of family surname with their tree, iteration, and node, then followed by an individual name, education level, and area of specialty. Each segment of their name is monosyllabic or a single character. Outside of Dykon society, urogs use their individual name, or they might choose a name that blends with the culture where they live.
