The Plane of Air, innermost of the Elemental Planes, is a vast realm of wind, storms, and skies. Illuminated by great artificial globes of flame and distant starlight from the material universe, the plane is populated by air elementals, dragons, air scamps, and an empire of jaathoom genies. Though mostly clouds and empty skies, the plane isn't entirely bereft of solid ground, including rock and ice created by the residents or dragged into their realm from the distant Plane of Earth or neighboring Plane of Water. The regrown pockets of the Plane of Wood have let loose giant pieces of driftwood into the plane as well. Bizarre, drifting spheres of brass and iron make for the most convenient navigational aids. The brass spheres have become known for housing the magitech metropolises of the vast Jaathoom Empire. The iron spheres were once shunned but have since become the site of constant extraplanar activity as corporations from the Universe establish Axis-reviewed contracts to mine these lucrative sites. Such mining endeavors have led to some material corporations abandoning their primary operations in the Universe and switching their focus to the Plane of Air.

The jaathooms rule from their shining capital city of Armun Kelisk, built atop a series of 10 floating islands. Stable planar gateways grant the Jaathoom Empire access to the skies of countless planes, but the pre-Gap innovation of the elemental engine once allowed starships to traverse the Plane of Air to circumvent long interstellar travel times. The advent of Drift engines challenged jaathoom dominance in interstellar trade, and some ruthless jaathoom merchant lords have since sought means of destabilizing Drift reliability.

For the past few centuries, the Plane of Air has been a political free-for-all. Jaathoom factions grab for power and influence while cloud dragon diplomats and barathu entrepreneurs seek footholds in the chaotic sky cities. Little is known of the plane's two reigning elemental lords: Hshurha the Duchess of All Winds and Ranginori, the Duke of Thunder. None have heard from the duchess since the end of the Gap, and even some of her attendants believe she's exiled or imprisoned, though she still grants spells to her supporters. Conversely, Ranginori has recruited countless agents in secret to spread his teachings into the Drift, much to the consternation of the Jaathoom Empire.
