A sea of shifting colors, the Drift is the newest cosmological plane to appear. It first appeared 300 years ago when the tripartite deity, Triune, sent the Signal to all mortal species in the Universe. The Signal contained instructions for the creation of Drift engines that allowed technologically-advanced species to enter the new hyperspace plane and cross long distances at a much faster rate than using conventional space travel. With this advent, interstellar travel changed forever as countless species developed countless more engines, using the Drift to achieve faster-than-light travel previously tied to esoteric (or highly proprietary) equipment.

As only the technology of Drift engines can achieve entry into the Drift, other planes of existence remain relatively cut off from the plane, with one notable exception. In rare cases, when a Drift engine is activated, it somehow pulls a chunk of extraplanar matter from a seemingly random plane into the Drift with it. Matter pulled into the plane this way often emerges well beyond the scanners of a vessel, and most ships could never uncover the results of their engine's use. Still, it has led to a slow and steady buildup of extraplanar enclaves and holdouts across the emptiness of the Drift. While traveling in a starship to a destination, it isn't unheard of to encounter a group of celestials forced into piracy or a fiend-sponsored trading port.

The only native inhabitants of the Drift are the mysterious spectra and the deity, Triune. Spectra are unique beings created by the attraction of planar matter into the Drift. They defend technology and possess innate abilities to travel between the Drift and the Universe as though they had a non-magical internal Drift engine. The motivations of these beings remain as obscured as the history of the plane, though many point to the deity Triune and her immense metropolis of Alluvion that floats within the Drift.
