Ancient Security Measures Hazard 9

Complexity Complex
Stealth +20 (expert)
Description An ancient security system triggers and initiates a localized attack on detected hostiles. A noise somewhere between the rumbling of rock and the blare of an automated alarm system envelops the area as the ground begins to shake. Unnaturally precise sinkholes open beneath everyone nearby.

Disable DC 28 Athletics to forcibly climb out to an adjacent square, DC 28 Acrobatics to nimbly squeeze out of a sinkhole to an adjacent square; the sinkholes are permanent, and creatures that later enter the space of a sinkhole must attempt a Reflex save as if targeted by Activate Security Measures (see below)
Activate Security Measures [reaction] Trigger A creature uses an area attack, such as a grenade or spell that affects an area, that impacts the planet’s surface; Effect A sinkhole opens beneath each creature within 100 feet of the area effect’s impact. Each creature must attempt a DC 28 Reflex save. The hazard then rolls initiative if it hasn’t already.
SuccessThe creature avoids falling into a sinkhole and instead moves to an adjacent empty space of its choice.
FailureThe creature is pulled into a sinkhole and begins sinking. It’s immobilized until it frees itself with a successful check to disable the hazard. If a creature is stuck for 2 consecutive rounds, it sinks beneath the surface and must hold its breath or begin suffocating. An adjacent creature can free a stuck creature with a successful DC 30 Athletics check.
Critical FailureAs failure, except the creature is grabbed instead of immobilized, and it’s immediately pulled underground and must hold its breath or begin suffocating.

Routine (1 action) On the hazard’s initiative, each sinkhole crushes each creature within it with gravitational forces from the planet’s core. Affected creatures take 5d8 bludgeoning damage (DC 28 basic Fortitude save).
Special If any of the Stewards are pulled underground due to this complication and then freed by the PCs, the Stewards surrender and consent to be remanded to the proper authorities.
